Week 7 Storytelling: True and Blue as the Sea

(Merman by Tenuki Handcrafts)

The sea was my escape.

The waves of the ocean took my salty tears, and washed them all away.

It was also where I found my treasures.

I found my first treasure, a green sea glass, when I was five. Each time I went to the sea, there was something beautiful there for me.

I first stored them in a shoebox, but as I grew over twelve years, the box became a chest in my room, holding my countless sea treasures.

When I was younger I imagined that mermaids put my treasures there. I talked to them sometimes, and I told them my name: Terra.

I still spoke to them sometimes.

One day I approached the sea, but there was no treasure waiting for me. I frowned, but I suddenly saw a glimmer of shining silver of a tail that looked like the tail of a dolphin.

I sat in shock, as I saw a flash of a boy’s face and then a human arm tossing a bottle cap to me.

“Wait!” I cried out, but as soon as I saw him, he was gone.

The inside of the bottle cap said, “Happiness is on the horizon.”

I wondered if I was going crazy. Had a boy in the sea really given it to me?

***

The next day, when I reached the shore, I found a pearl lying on the sand.

“Are you there?” I called out softer, but then repeated louder.

Tears welled up in my eyes. I hoped that he was real, I needed him to be real. “Please! I just want to know I’m not crazy...”

“Don’t cry,” a voice called out.

I looked up, and saw the same boy, swimming in the water. If he had a tail I couldn’t see it.

He had a sun-kissed tan with many red tattoos and his right arm was covered with a sleeve of black tattoos. He had wild black hair that fell in tangles around his face, and chocolate brown eyes.

“Why did you throw me the bottle cap?”

He waded in the waters. He smiled with lips that looked like they would be soft to the touch. “To cheer you up.”

“Thank you…”

“You’re welcome,” He turned as if to swim into the depths of the ocean. “But, I must go.”

“But, you just got here!”

He turned around. “I’ll see you tomorrow, I promise.”

“Wait! Your name?”

“Kai!” He shouted, and dove into the ocean. Behind him his silver tail rose into the air and back down.

***

The next day I went to I went to the sea at the same time, and waited for Kai.

Not long after, he popped up from the water, smiling brighter than the sun that shone behind him.

He held something in his hand as he swam closer to me. “Hey, I got this for you!”

He swam closer and closer to the shoreline, exposing that his top half was muscular and well-defined. But where his hips were the long fish tail started. The scales on the tail shined like loose change.

“Wow,” I said and I didn’t really mean to.

“I know I’m freakish. I can go--”

“No! Please don’t go, I…” I like you a lot, but the words died somewhere in my throat.

He smiled, and held his hand out. There was a locket in his hand. It was beautiful, made of a small clam, and the chain was made of small sea shells.

“It’s beautiful,” I said.

“Like you…” He said softly, and sheepishly grinned.

I felt my cheeks warm.

“Here, I’ll put it on,” he said, and  as he put it on, each time his fingers accidentally touched my neck, I felt a warmth radiate through my body.

I turned back around, and we were too close together, but neither of us moved.

“I love it,” I whispered.

“Do you love my other treasures? All of them?”

“You mean, all this time it was you?”

“Yeah. I saw you the first time I went to the shore. You were much smaller then and so was I,” he explained. “You looked so sad, so I gave you one of my treasures. You looked so happy, so I did it every time since.”

“I have loved every one of them. I have them all,” I told them. “They’re up in my room, we can go--” I clasped my hand over my mouth.

“No, there is a way,” he said. “Under tonight’s Full Moon, there’s a chance that I can turn human. But there is another chance that I won’t make it through the night…”

“No!” I shouted. “You can’t!”

“Terra, I have watched you all of these years. I listened to every word. I dreamed of this day that I could reply to you.”

“But we just met--“

“No, we’ve known each other for years, you just didn’t know it.” He smiled. “Before we officially met, I was going to do the ritual anyway.”

I didn’t know what to say.

“Come back tonight,” he said, and before I could say anything, he dove into the ocean, and disappeared.

***

When I returned, the moon was full and reflected on the waters around him.

“Just in case,” he said, and he pressed his lips to mine into a kiss.

He pulled away from me, put his arms in the air, and shouted in a foreign language.
The water started to bubble around him.

His eyes watered. “I love you, Terra, don’t forget.”

There were so many bubbles around him, and I was reminded of the real ending of The Little Mermaid, when she turned to sea foam. I cried out as he disappeared into the waves.

I ran into the waves and an undertow took me under.

When I opened my eyes I saw it was no undertow. It was Kai. He had pulled me with his arms, and was swimming with legs.

We swam up to the surface, hugging me against him.

“It worked!” I cheered.

“Yes, Terra. As true and blue as the sea, don’t you see? We are meant to be.”

Just one thing: how was I going to hide my newly-human boyfriend in my room?

THE END
(for now.)

Authors Note:
Sorry it it felt like it ended abruptly, or the plot moved too fast! I was running out of words (our max is 1,000!) It was quite challenging to keep such a big story contained in 1,000 words.

I was inspired by all of the merpeople that were in the Japanese Mythology that I read this week. (I was surprised by how many!) There wasn’t exactly a story with a romance like this in the myths. I took my own artistic liberties with that.

This was my first time writing about a merman, or merpeople for that matter, and it was really fun! There are so many mermaid stories, so I thought, how perfect for a Young Adult Romance with a merman! (If this is your first time reading one of my stories: I love writing Young Adult! I usually write about vampires or faeries, but I love all mystical creatures--inlcuding merpeople!)

Also, this time I tried to make a story that had an actual happy ending for once. I tend to write dark, bittersweet stories, but it’s good to have a sweet and happy ending sometimes!

Not only is it a happy ending, but an ending that is making me think of all the cute things that will happen. The antics of hiding her boyfriend in her room, having to buy him clothes, and adjusting him to human society. I wonder if her family would be supportive?

So many possibilities, and I just love Kai and Terra, so you may see a sequel to this one soon! (I hoped you guys liked them too!)

Reading Diary B: Japanese Mythology

Myth-Folklore Unit: Japanese Mythology

(Image from jpellgen)

Reading B:
1. The Labors of Yamato - The Grotto of Love
  • I love having the short poem in the beginning. I think I am going to do that in this week's story.
  • Sirens and mermaids! I did have a siren in one of my novels, but I've never written about mermaids. I think that might be interesting to try! Then again, writing about sirens are always interesting. What is there was a siren that fell in love with a human, but has a hard time getting over her evil nature, and in the end kills him.
  • Dragons! Also would make a cool story. Maybe I could write about people who can turn into dragons?
  • The siren sends him on a mission, and when he finds a certain magical object they can fall in love.
2. The Labors of Yamato - The Golden Apple
  • Riding a bird, like a stark. Reminds me of the giant eagles that are rode upon in Lord of the Rings.
3. The Labors of Yamato - The Demon Boar
  • He is sent upon another quest. That would make an unsettling ending. Like, to have the hero (or heroine) on a quest, and when he comes back he has to go on yet another quest! A cool cumulative tale would include a hero going on various quests!
4. The Labors of Yamato - The Grass-Cleaving Sword
  • The fire as a barrier. A great fire lighting ablaze that hinders the main character of the story.
  • A maiden in fiery clothing, running through the fire. What a fantastical and interesting image! How can she walk through fire? Surely she is some sort of supernatural creature.
  • She ripped her clothes off and her hair singed.
  • He cut the grass and I believe did save her?
5. The Labors of Yamato - The Sacred Sword
  • That was horrible! He told her to get lost because of the burns and her singed hair! That is not okay.
  • Labyrinthine trails
  • The siren has rejected him.
6. The Sacred Sword (cont.)
  • Kwannon, Goddess of Mercy and Love
  • Being lent hounds by the Goddess
  • A magical stag
7. The Labors of Yamato - The Dragon
  • A dragon has ravaged the city
8. The Dragon (cont.)
  • Just when you think it is happily ever after, the princess is killed. I kind of liked this ending. I didn't expect and it was an interesting change of pace!
9. The Faery Robe
  • Tennin or tenshi are mystical beings similar to angels or faeries. Really cool! I like this story already, obviously. (I love reading about faeries!)
  • The faery dropped a robe
  • What a mean fisherman. He makes her do things like dance to get the robe back.
  • A faery that skims the tops of the oceans and leave a shimmering rainbow behind.
10. The Jewel of Heart's Desire: The Land of Morning Calm
  • Tide Jewels are magical gems that the Sea God used to control the tides.
  • A woman secretly ruling the lands
  • Sea dragons
  • A crystal ball
11. The Quest of the Jewel
  • Ama dive for pearls. What is a teenage girl was diving for pearls and she stumbled upon a mereman? And of course they fall in love and all that good stuff. But, the problem is that well, he is a mereman! Maybe she has to go on a hunt for a certain gem or pearl that is in the sea that can turn him human?
  • A sea-dragon attacks!
12. Uraishima
  • Turtle as a symbol of long life
  • A dragon palace guarded by nixies, which I am under the impression that they are mermaids.

Reading Diary A Japanese Mythology

Myth-Folklore Reading Diary A: Japanese Mythology
(Ninigi Stands Next to Amaterasu)
Reading A:
Izanagi and Izanami
  • Inanagi is the God of the Heavens and Izanami is Goddess of love and beauty.
  • Izanami gave birth to everything: gods, humans, and all creatures.
  • A flower fell down and became the moon.
  • Out of the moon fell more gods, humans and creatures.
  • A floating bridge of heaven (reminds me of the Rainbow Bridge from Norse Mythology)
  • His spear dripped and made an island.
  • I didn't like this part where Izanami was basically like, "Women aren't to speak before spoken to." This surprised me because a lot of old mythology is more focused on the Goddess rather than the God. In fact most "pagan" religions were matriarchal.
  • And the infamous Amaterasu was born!
Izanagi and Izanami (cont.)
  • Amaterasu is the sister of Susanowo is the god of the sea and of storms, and Tsukuyomi is the god of the moon.
  • This actually has a rainbow bridge. It's interesting when myths are similar.
  • The moon God is morose, turbulent, and sinister.
  • The moon God fell. The trope of the bad or evil son.
  • Ifuya-zaka is the center of the earth
  • Portal of yomi
  • Amaterasu reminds me of an angel of a Valkyrie, the way she swoops down from the heavens into earth.
The Miraculous Mirror
  • Weaving a dark web of doom with darkness and dismay. Makes me think of if faeries wove a web for evil magic. Maybe a curse of sorts?
  • A dragon! I could write a story with a dragon in it! A classic fantasy where the hero slays a dragon.
The Eight-Forked Serpent of Koshi
  • Monstrous fish. Makes me think of a story with sirens or evil water faeries.
  • The custom that is very Arthurian of, let me do this deed and I will marry your daughter.
  • A person turned into a comb

  • The Heaven-Descended
  • I like the poem included in this. I wonder if it would be good to put a poem into my stories?
  • The celestial realm. Taking the body of the prince to the celestial realm
  • Gaining three items: the necklace of jewels, the sacred sword, and the miraculous mirror.
The Heaven-Descended (cont.)
  • The description of Uzume was...interesting.
  • The giant taking the fair maiden, very Arthurian.
The Fortunate Fish-Hook
  • A magical fishhook, a magical tool.
  • A cassia tree
  • A secret wedding
The Fortunate Fish-Hook (cont.)
  • I've said it, and it'll say it again--I don't like talking animals!
  • I like the lamentation!
  • I do like the idea of the Raven as a guide.
  • Wearing all of the magic objects for the big quest!
The Labors of Yamato-The Rescue of the Princess
  • The emperor (or King) thinks he is descended from the Gods. Reminds me of Alexander the Great, or Carolus Rex.
  • A siren! Those are always fun.
  • A castle being raided
The Rescue of the Princess (cont.)
  • A jeweled dagger held in one's teeth.
  • And a happy ending!

Week 6: Review

Favorite Thing From Today's Announcement:

(Image from: Laura Gibbs)

Why It's My Favorite:
There were a couple of things that I liked from Today's Announcement, but this resonated the most with me. I liked the simplicity of this, but how very enriching it is. This is exactly what I need to do in my life. I feel like if I do more Ctrl, Alt, and Del that my life will be quite pleasant.

My Quote of the Week:
(Image was made be me, for my blog)
Wisdom from a favorite Star Wars character, but in all seriousness, this is amazing advice. I actually have a copy of this quote hung on my wall.

Famous Last Words

My Reading This Week:
This week's reading was enjoyable. It was also easy to understand and to follow. I didn't do my usual speed read, and so I think that helped with the comprehension. Also, I've liked how I've been doing my reading diaries lately.

My Best Writing this Week:
Once again, my best reading for this week was for this class. Here's my Storytelling Post. I'm also excited about a story idea that I came up with for my Mystery and Suspense class. It pains me to say for, I think the third week in a row, that I have not been working on my novel. I need to get on track, and I plan to just that this week, I will force myself to sit down for one hour and WRITE!

Other People's Writing:
I was reminded to spellcheck EVERYTHING, and to re-read what I write several times,

My Other Classes:
This week slowed down, compared to last week, and for that I am thankful. This coming week is going to be much busier though. I have a lot of homework due in all my classes, and I have an Exam this week. The hardest thing to do, surprisingly, is to find free time.

Someone told me recently, "When you're an adult, you don't find free time--you MAKE IT." This statement is becoming abundantly clear to me. However, I am still trying to figure out how to make it. I mean, I do spend time doing things I enjoy, like researching Norse Mythology and lurking on Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr. But I have found a hard time trying to find time to read novels that are awaiting on my Kindle, or shows lined up on my Netflix queue. I'll figure it out in time.

Besides, the New Moon is October 12th, and this is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts!

Something Cool I Found:
If you don't know that I am in love with Norse Mythology, then you haven't been reading my Curation Spaces (which you should! I find a lot of cool stuff!) In addition to those things, I found a news article from February that I thought was really cool. Apparently there is being an Asatru Temple or "hof"  being built in Iceland. (Asatru is a modern day adaptation of the original Norse Pagan Religion.) There has not been a temple of such built in about 1,000 years!

(Thor, the Norse God by Logan Zawacki)
Well, all this talk about Norse Mythology, I part with an image of my favorite God: Thor!

Week 6: Curation Spaces

I've become quite addicted to digging around on Pinterest for Mythology finds! It always surprised me how much that I find.

I love learning about Norse Gods and Goddesses, and so I am happy to share with you this week's (Norse) Mythology Finds!

1. Learn About Norse Mythology in minutes!

I stumbled upon this awesome YouTuber, TheSwedishLad, who has made videos where he explains Norse Mythology and has animations that show what he talked about. His videos are easy to understand, and they're only minutes long. Plus, he has a Swedish accent which I think makes these videos feel more authentic.

An easy way to find his videos on YouTube are to simply search for "TheSwedishLad Mythology"!

2. Meet the Gods and Goddesses of the Norse Pantheon
(Thor from WizardRealm)
2. This page has easy to read, bite-sized introductions to the Norse Gods and Goddesses! Not to mention, it has great images to accompany each God and Goddess. I saved these to my Pinterest Board!

3. Origins of the Days of the Week!
(Image from The Meta Picture)
 3. Via Pinterest I found this guide to the origins of the days of our week, which are mostly related to Norse Mythology! It's really interesting.

Week 6: Growth Mindset

This week, I talked about Growth Mindset in a different way! I blogged about Growth Mindset on my Vegan Food Blog HappyHealthyNoms!

Here's the blog post.

I have a Caturday every Saturday, and I thought, what a better post for Caturday than the Growth Mindset Memes! So, included my favorite Growth Mindset Meme and gave some resources at the bottom for interested readers.

I hadn't heard of Growth Mindset before this class, and it has really helped me a lot. It's an important thought process, and I hope by sharing it on my other blog, that it can help others!

I'm also in love with the Growth Mindset Memes. I love Cats and I love Growth Mindset and I like Memes, so how can you go wrong?

You can't!
