Reading Diary A: Ovid's Metamorphoses Book I

Ovid's Metamorphosis Part A:

Reading A:
  • Flood myths
  • I like the idea of the Neriods, which is evidently not a term solely for Neriods of the Sea. It also refers to faeries, mermaids, and nymphs
  • The rocks being thrown, and turning into humans, was an interesting take on the creation of humans
  • Interesting image of the sky in Phaethon (the constellations coming alive and attacking
  • The theme of pushing your limits, and trying to do something that is beyond your powers. Pushing the limits of humanity (via Phaethon)
  • Fire myth (Fire instead of flood!)
  • How about if the fire was caused by someone who isn't divine. I'm thinking Victorian Era, with the great London fire or when Nero supposedly burned Rome down (and played his fiddle as he watched it burn.) The fire was caused by a Vampire (of course.) The vampire will be the villain of the story, and he/she wants to get rid of the humans, so he can replace them with vampires. The fire is a statement more than anything, since he needs to turn the humans into vampires. The protagonist of the story has to stop them before the whole place burns down.
  • Phaethon's story is very reminiscent of Icarus' story
  • The origin of the peacock
  • Many eyes keeping watch
  • Someone turning into a tree, a punishment almost, after grieving
  • Someone turning into a swan, choosing the flood over the fire
  • Nymphs
  • As Professor Gibbs put it, "Jupider's unbridled libido."
  • Each of Jupider's lovers are punished, but he is never punished. I don't think this is fair at all.
  • Someone turning into a bear, and then becoming a constelation.
  • The bear could be a shapeshifter instead, to add a more supernatual aspect to the myth.
  • Being turned into constellations
  • Disguises, decieving your lover
  • Dionysus, Bacchus (the 'party god' so to say, is very interesting)
  • Secret birth
  • Being raised by nymphs. How would one end up after being raised by nymphs? We see how Bacchus turns out.
